According to his obituary, dated 23 January 1901 in The Quincy Daily Whig, George Lee was "past middle age, married, and is survived by a wife and five children."

It continued: "He was a veteran of the Civil war, and was a gentleman of splendid character and ability. His father, Joseph D. Lee, resides in St. Joseph, where the remains were interred yesterday, in Mt. Mora cemetery."
