Henry E. Kottmeyer, 61, retired Marshfield police officer who was associated with the local department for 27 years, died of a coronary ailment at 4:30 Friday afternoon at St. Joseph's Hospital, where he had undergone surgery earlier in the day. He had been ill for the past two months.
Mr. Kottmeyer joined the police department Aug. 29, 1926, as a motorcycle patrolman. He assumed desk duties in 1942 and received his formal appointment as sergeant Jan. 1, 1949. He retired from the force Sept. 15, 1953, and for the past three years was employed by the Glenn Hughes Car Sales.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the local American Legion post, and was the director of St. John's Bowling Club.
Practically a lifelong resident of this city, Mr. Kottmeyer, was a year old when he came here with his parents from Mount Olive, Ill, where he was born March 10, 1895. He attended local schools and served in the Army during World War I with the Military Police.
After returning home from service, which included overseas duty, he was employed as a baggage man with the Soo Line for six years before joining the police department.
He married Barbara Pilsner Oct. 8, 1931, at St. John's Catholic Church here. Since her death in 1951 he had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Donna) Regner, Marshfield until last July when he went to live with a sister, Mrs. George Knutzen, 1100 S. Cherry Ave.
Other survivors are three stepchildren, Mrs. Lloyd (Jeanette) Barton, and Louis Pilsner, Wisconsin Rapids, Alvin Pilsner, Madison; four sisters, Mrs. Les Clugg, Racine, Mrs. Dan Robinson and Mrs. Sam Peterson, both of Portage, and Mrs. Ted Gehrig, Racine, and 7 grandchildren. Three sisters preceded him in death.
A funeral Mass will be read at 9 o'clock Monday morning at St. John's Catholic Church, with the Rt. Rev. Msgr. A. M. Schuh officiating. Burial with Legion military rites, will follow at Hillside.
Beginning this evening the body will repose at the Rembs Funeral Home, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7:30 tonight. The general rosary is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
