Roger was born in Zeeland, ND to August & Kathryn Haas nee Schauer. He was the second oldest of four children. After his mother Kathryn died, his father remarried, he had three more brothers.
Roger was busy doing Post Office work, selling Fuller Brush and encyclopedias, which is how Roger met Roberta in 1954. He proposed to her on Valentine's Day, and they married in June 1955 after nine months of courtship.
Roger and his wife Roberta were the parents of three daughters, Kathryn born 1960, Karla born 1962 and Karolyn born 1964.
