Matthew was the son of Ethel Dwyer and Matthew M. Dwyer Sr. who had predeceased his son, of Lyndhurst New Jersey. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps on December 9 1964 in New York NY, and in Vietnam he was assigned to and served with Company A, 3d Engineer Battalion, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

On February 28, a CH-45D from HMM-262 was on route from Dong Ha to Khe Sanh in Hoa Huong District of northern Quang Tri Province. The aircraft was on a mission to bring a repair crew for a damaged CH-46D when it was hit with automatic weapons fire in the vicinity of the border of Cam Lo and Hoa Huong Districts. The CH-46D caught fire, crashed and burned on impact, recovery crews located one survivor who later died at the 3d Medical Battalion in Quang Tri. Twenty three passengers and crew were killed on the ill-fated flight; one of the casualties was LCpl Dwyer.
