Edward F. Arcularius- The material advancement of the Prarie state is the wonder of the world, and it has been largely secured through the sturdy and intelligent manhood of citizens from the eastern states, with their moral, intellectual and physical stamina; but their work is nearly complete, and every year sees more new graves filled by those who helped to build an empire, and soon, too soon, will the last of those sturdy pioneers be laid away; but their memory will forever remain green among those who loved them and appreciated their efforts. The late Edward F. Arcularius was among the honored pioneers at Rock Island County, and bore and important part of its upbuilding and progress.

He was born in Albany, New York, February 15, 1803, and was of German descent, his father having been a native of the fatherland. During his boyhood the family removed to New York City, where he learned the tanner's trade, and after his emigration to Pike County, Illinois, he continued to work t the same for some time. He was first married in that country, and by that union had five children, two now living- Mrs. Jennie Hebberd, of Galesburg, Illinois, and Mrs. Lucy Lamore, of Sydney, Nebraska. In 1834 he removed to Rock Island County, when most of the land was still in its primitive condition and the settlements were few and far between, and he erected the first house on the road between Rock Island and Dixon, it being a log structure in which the family lived while he cleared and developed his new farm. He prospered in his undertakings and became one of the well-to-do citizens of his community.

His first wife died after the removal to Rock Island County, and on the 11th of July, 1853, he wedded Miss Emily Axelson, of Rock Island County, who was born in the eastern part of Sweden and had come to America with her brother and sister in 1852. She had received a fair education in her native tongue, but on reaching this country was unable to speak a word of English. She can now both speak and read the latter language. Of the six children born of the second union, one died in infancy, and the others are as follows: Hettie, wife of Jason Cox, of Moline, by whom she has three children; Ellen, wife of Ernest Rathburn, of Chicago, by whom she has two children; Margaret, wife of Cassius Cox, of Moline, by whom she has three children; Theresa, wife of Adelbert Abrams, of Lawrence, Michigan, by whom she has three children; and Martin L.

For many years Mr. Arcularius was an active and prominent member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and served as class leader, trustee, steward and Sunday-school superintendent. He was also called upon to fill a number of public positions of honor ad trust, including that of school director, and proved a most faithful and capable official. His career was ever such as to commend him to the confidence and esteem of the entire community, and his death, which occurred October 2, 1887, was widely and deeply mourned, as he had a host of friends and acquaintances throughout the country.

Martin Arcularius, the only son, was born October 6, 1871, on the old homestead in Hampton Township, and remained at the home until he had attained his majority, acquiring his education in the public schools of the neighborhood. On starting out in life for himself he worked as a farm hand for one year, and then was in the express business in the city for the same length of time, after which he returned home and worked with his brother-in-law until 1897, when he took entire charge of the farm. He is a thorough and skillful farmer and is meeting with a well deserved success in his operations. He cast his first vote for Harrison in 1892 and four years later supported McKinley, being unwavering in his allegiance to the Republican party. He is a charter member of the Home Forum at Moline and is a most progressive, enterprising young man, of industrious habits and excellent business ability.

Edward Frank Arcularius was not only one of the pioneers of Hampton Township, but was also one of Rock Island county's most representative men, about whose history clusters memories of many kindly deeds and acts which showed unusual business acumen and keen foresight He was born in New York in 1803, and farmed for some years in his native state. About 1838, he came to Rock Island County, where he entered a farm of 160 acres in Hampton Township. During his long residence in this community, he saw the prairie converted into rich farm land and prosperous cities. He built the first log house in this section of this township and built a fine brick residence in 1857.

Even farming methods were revolutionized during his residence here, and he took great satisfaction in the onward prog­ ress on every side, for he was a man of broad views and comprehensive thought.

In 1853, Mr. Arcularius married Emily Axellson of Sweden, born February 11, 1823, and the following children were born to them: Hattie, lived in Moline; Ellen, lived in Davenport, la.; Margaret, lived in Arizona; Theressa, lived in Michigan, and Martin, lived in Moline, Ill. In religious faith Mr. Arcularius was a Methodist, and held firm to the creed of that denomination.

He always voted the republican ticket from the time of the formation of that party. The family was one of the best known in this part of the state, and deservedly so, for its representatives have nobly borne their part in the development of the county.

This farm remained Edward's home until his death, at the age of 85, on October 22, 1887, when he was buried in Hampton Cemetery. Emily reached the century mark, becoming 100 just one month prior to her death on March 8, 1923. She was laid to rest besides her husband of over 30 years, as well as his two previous wifes who had lived short lives, only living to the ages of 26 and 33.

Emigrated to Rock Island Co, IL, in 1834, after spending six years in Pike Co, IL (Biographical Directory of Rock Island County, 438). Owned 180 acres of land in Hampton Twp. The 1850 Census has Rebecca's mother, Lucy Caldwell, age 66, living with the family, which at that tie included George, Mary, Lucius, Lucy, Henry, and Edward (Franque data). In 1842-3, Edward Frederick Arcularius and his wife are listed as having been co-founders, with Rev. G. G. Worthington, of the Methodist Episcopal Church of Hampton. At that time the membership comprised only eleven people.

Fred, as he was known, emigrated from Illinois to California around 1910. The other members of his family remained in Illinois. In the Reedley/Dinuba area of California's Central Valley (near Fresno), he bought a farm and began a new family. Both Fred and his bride Nellie married relatively late in life. She had been living with her parents, Jasper and Maria Kolb, and working as a practical nurse. They began to farm in Reedley, California. They built a craftsman-style house that still stands on the property, which is now planted with fruit trees, at 5351 Avenue 424. Their children were raised in this house and Nellie continued to live there and manage the farm after Fred's death. She made a good profit during the Depression, managing the farm efficiently and well. Her brothers and parents farmed nearby. Nellie died of cancer in 1943, nursed by her daughter Hazel, whose husband was away at the front.

49. Henry ARCULARIUS, born 1842 at Illinois (1850 Census, Hampton Twp); died c. 1865. Civil war records indicate that a Henry Arcularius of New York was
killed at the Battle of Spotsylvania, Virginia. Since family legend has it that he died at the battle of Chickamauga - but no record exists of his participation in this battle - perhaps the Spotsylvania record is correct. Henry Arcularius's parents, who
lived in Brooklyn, NY, were originally from Germany.

50. Lucius ARCULARIUS, born 1838 (1850 Census - Hampton Twp). Family legend says that Lucius went out to California for the Gold Rush in the late 1840s, wrote home saying that he had found gold, and was never heard from again.
However, since he was born in 1838 according to the 1850 Census (living in Hampton CO), it's unlikely. Or he'd have to have gone around the mid-1850s, pretty late in the game.

Edward Frederick ARCULARIUS married a second wife, Rebecca CALDWELL born 1813 at New York (1850 Census, Hampton Twp); died 1852 at Hampton, Rock Island Co, IL (Biographical Dictionary of Rock Island Co, p. 438). There were apparently no children from this marriage.
