The first child of six of James C. Gilliland 1828-1883, born in Jackson County, Alabama and died in Van Zandt County, Texas, and Mahaley Clardy 1829-before 1900, born in Lawrence County, Alabama and probably died in Van Zandt County, Texas.

Miley's mother Mahaley's memorial has not been located but it is presumed she died before 1900, since she is missing from the 1900 U S Census, and is probably buried in the same cemetery as her husband, without or missing a headstone.

The family moved from Alabama to Texas in the 1840s, first to Henderson County then Van Zandt County, and all their children were born in Van Zandt County, Texas.

Miley had four sisters and one brother. Three of her four sisters are shown below. The fourth, Texanna 'Tex' Gilliland 1857-1937, never married and died in Terrell, Kaufman County, Texas. Her only brother, James Monroe Gilliland 1866-1940, died in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas and is buried in the Mabank, Kaufman County, Texas area, according to his Certificate of Death.

Miley is shown in the 1860 Census as six years old and in the 1870 Census as being 16, and at both times living with her parents, indicating that she was born in 1854. In the 1880 Census, she is married to William Goodnight and her age is 23, indicating a birth year of 1856 or 1857. Her Certificate of Death says she was born in 1859 and is 78 years old.

Her parents were married on January 13, 1853 in Van Zandt County, Texas, and had at least six children. Available records show Miley is the oldest. It is more likely that her parents were correct when giving her age on the first two U S Census' she was reported in, and her birth year would be 1854.

The year 1862 shown on her headstone is obviously wrong.

On October 6, 1872 in Henderson County, Texas, Miley married William David Goodnight 1848-1943. He was a cousin of the famous co-founder of the Goodnight-Loving Cattle Trail in Texas.

Miley and her husband had seven children together, five daughters and two sons.
