Nancy Benton was the twin sister of Susannah Benton who married Pleasant Owen Pittman. When their parents, Mordecai and Priscilla Benton died, Sir James was named guardian of Susannah. His older brother Pleasant Owen had to obtain Sir James' permission to marry Susannah. Sir James and his family moved from Jackson County, Georgia to Mississippi about 1840, according to family biographer lona Elrod, for the same reason that caused the Rogers brothers to move: so that daughters could hold the land in their own names. Seven of Nancy and Sir James Pittman's grandsons served in 9th regiment, Mississippi Volunteers, CSA.
