GLEN FORK — Arwon Eugene Blankenship, 76, departed this life Wednesday, January 7, 2009, in Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital.

Born July 25, 1933, in Clearfork, he was the son of the late Virgil Blankenship (1910-1997) and Ruth May Tilley-Blankenship (1916-2006).

Mr. Blankenship attended Baileysville High until leaving at the age of 16 to join the U.S. Army where he received many medals, which include Distinguished Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, four Bronze Stars, one Silver Star, Korean Presidential Citation, Purple Heart, Army Occupation Medal, Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge 2nd Award, National Defense Service Medal, VietNam Campaign Medal, VietNam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, eight Over Seas Service Bars, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Forces Medal. Mr. Blankenship retired from the U.S. Army on August 31, 1973, with 24 years of dedicated service to his country.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ramona Imogene Acord-Blankenship (1933-2003); a son, Larry Joseph Blankenship (Deceased); two brothers, Onnie Lee Blankenship (1932-1994) and Raymond Blankenship (1938-1957); and a sister, Florence Blankenship-Maynor (1943-Deceased).

Those left to cherish his memory are two sons, Philip Blankenship of Glen Fork and Richard Blankenship of Texas; three daughters, Doris Blankenship-Wallace and her husband Randall of Matheny, Tina Blankenship-Bolen and her husband Norvel, Jr., of Glen Fork, and Linda Blankenship-Walsh and her husband Joseph of Glen Fork; five brothers, Daniel "Danny" Blankenship, William "Bill" Howard Blankenship (1935-2017), Bobby "Bob" Dale Blankenship (B. 1941), Hershel Blankenship, and David Blankenship; four sisters, Mary Blankenship-Jones (B. 1937), Frances Blankenship-Jonas, Mabel Blankenship-Ridenour, and Phostina Blankenship-Belcher (Deceased); five grandchildren, Shawna Hall, Brandon George Wallace, Norvel Edward Bolen III, Joseph Arwon Bolen, and David Bryce Stafford; several nieces and nephews and a host of family and friends.

A celebration of Mr. Blankenship's life will be 1:00 p.m. today, January 11, 2009, at Adam Toler Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Ernest Francis, Jr., officiating. Mr. Blankenship will be laid to rest by his wife, Ramona, in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
