Timothy Walters Grummon, 42, of San Diego, Calif., formerly of Springfield, died Friday at the University of California San Diego Hospital after an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 16, 1951, in Springfield, the son of Richard R. and Evelyn W. Grummon.

Mr. Grummon was an artist, teacher and author. He graduated with honors from Glenwood High School in 1969, received his bachelor of arts degree from Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, in 1973 and master's degree in linguistics from the University of Illinois in 1978. He also studied in Ghana, Africa, in 1972. He was a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer for two years in Ipamu, Zaire, and was one of over 100 corps volunteers captured and held for three days by Idi Amin. He taught at the University of Isfahan in Isfahan, Iran, and fled the country due to the Iranian revolution. He also taught for several years in Saudi Arabia at Riyadh and Jedda, where he was employed by the Center for Applied Linguistics. As an artist he was known for his use of wax and colors.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Springfield, Cornell College Alumni Association and many volunteer organizations in San Diego, Calif.

In addition to his parents of Springfield, surviving are a sister, Rebecca J. Grummon of San Diego, Calif.; brother, Dr. Stephen R. Grummon of Springfield, Va., and Washington, D.C.; a nephew; two nieces; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Remains were donated to medical science.

A memorial service will be held at a later date at Cathedral Church of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in San Diego, Calif.
