Martha A. Braden was listed as Martha HELMSTUTTER with her twin sister Sophronia HELMSTUTTER and their mother Frances HELMSTUTTER on the 1850 Orange County, Indiana Census,(that surname could have been spelled differently on the 1850 Indiana Census). Frances was Mary Frances Braden who had married Christian HELMSTUTTER 13 September 1846 in Orange County, Indiana. By the next year these children born to Frances were listed as Bradens.

Both Martha and Sophronia married their spouses using the surname Braden. Mary BRADAIN was listed on the 1880 Indiana Census in the household of William T. and Sophronia E. Marshall as mother-in-law. These twin sisters with the applicable names are the only ones found on the 1850 Indiana Census whether they were born with the surname HELMSTUTTER or BRADEN.

Martha A. Braden married William Albert Hatt on 5 January 1871 in Parke County, Indiana. There was one daughter born of their union. Ida Jane Hatt was born 7 July 1871 (listed as 1870 on her death certificate but she was not listed on the 1870 census with her mother).

Martha A. Braden Hatt died on 9 June 1875 in Parke County, Indiana. Even though the Rush Creek Cemetery records has her listed as the daughter of W. A. Hatt she was his wife and there is a tombstone for her.
