Charles Reuben Hatt was born ca 1858 to Joseph Franklin and Cynthia Ann McKinsey Hatt. He was probably born in either Fountain or Parke County, Indiana. He had four siblings, Sarah E., William Albert, Maria (Hunt), and Naomi.

Charles married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Shoaf on 6 March 1879 in Parke County, Indiana. There were two children born of their union, Alma Luna and Emanuel Monroe "Manuel."

Charles Reuben Hatt died 12 December 1895 in Parke County, Indiana and was buried on 14 December 1895, in the Hatt Plot near his parents and sister Sarah E. Hatt. His death was due to injuries he received in a mining accident on 10 December 1895.

Killed In a Mine
Charles Hatt, who was working in the mines at Lyford, received injuries on Tuesday evening of last week, which resulted in his death the following Thursday. He was 37 years of age and leaves a wife and 2 children. His remains were interred near his home at Tanger. He was a brother of ex-Marshall William Hatt of this place. No tombstone has been found, but there is a concret edging around the Hatt Plot and tombstone could have sunk below the soil.
