Our Grandfather, Joseph Albert Schuman, was the youngest child of John Albert and Laura Belle (See) Schuman. Joe was born in Fairmount, Illinois on November 25, 1899. The family later moved to a farm in Fithian, Illinois before settling in Danville, Illinois.
Joe started working at the age of eleven, while still going to school. He sold newspapers and delivered groceries, along with doing odd jobs for a local grocer. He continued to work throughout his adolescence to help support his family. He worked on a farm in Danville before learning the sheet metal trade. Joe opened his own tin shop in Danville in the mid 1920's. He had a wonderful work ethic and a fine mind for business. Joe was honest and hardworking.
On September 14, 1922 our Grandfather married our Grandmother, Anna Marie Abel, at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Danville. They bought a home on Anderson Street in Danville and on December 15, 1923, welcomed my Father, Joseph William Schuman, into the world. Dad was their only child. My Grandfather would later teach my Dad all about the Sheet Metal trade. After Joe retired, he and our Grandmother moved to another house in Danville at 704 Florida Ave.
"Big Joe" – as he was called after my Dad was born - was very much an early to bed, early to rise type of man all his life. A trait he passed on to my Dad, who passed it on to me! Our Grandfather was not a traveler, nor was he a man who lived a busy life, full of adventure. Joe was simply a quiet man who went to Mass every Sunday, loved his family, enjoyed cooking – and even did housework! He was devoted to my Grandmother. On summer evenings they enjoyed listening to the Danville Municipal Band play in the park across from their home. I fondly remember playing Checkers with Grandpa - many, many times. Good memories!
Grandpa's favorite baseball team was the Chicago Cubs and he often listened to them by transistor radio in his backyard. He could also be found watching the Chicago Cubs at my Dad's house on Sunday afternoons. (You see, Grandpa resisted buying a color TV - but couldn't resist watching the Cubs in splendid color!) Joe had a wonderful vegetable garden and raised roses in the back yard. He would grow cucumbers and my Dad would make bread and butter pickles every summer. I looked forward to that day every year! Our Grandparents came over nearly every Sunday afternoon and I loved their visits.
Joe died on July 30, 1980 after a brief illness. He and our Grandmother were married 57 years. They had one Son, Joe, a Daughter-in-law, Joyce, and five Grandchildren; John, JoAnn, Jennifer, Jeannine and Jodi.
I have very happy memories of my Grandparents and think about them every day.
